During the Panther/Sabres ice hockey game at the HSBC Arena fans were shocked to see Richard Zednik of the Florida Panthers cut and bleeding from the neck.
Another player accidentally kicked up and the blade of his skate landed at Zednik's neck.
His right carotid artery was severed, spilling blood onto the ice.
Zednik is now in stable condition after undergoing surgery to close the cut.
Had Zednik worn a neckguard, the injury would have been prevented. Many players find it uncomfortable to wear neckguards.
