US National Soccer Team Striker Charles Davies Seriously Injured in Car Crash

MEXICO CITY - AUGUST 12: Jonny Magallon #2 of...
Charlie Davies, striker for the US national soccer team, has been seriously injured in a car accident.

He was one of two passengers in the car, which crashed in Washington DC on the George Washington Parkway. The other passenger a young lady of 22, Ashley Roberta was killed in the crash.

Davies' injuries included a shattered right leg, and a lacerated bladder. Doctors predict that it will take him six to twelve months to recover.

He will most likely have to miss playing for the US in the World Cup in June next year.

He was playing for the team against Honduras last Saturday. The win against Honduras got a place for the US in the World Cup.

In July 2009 Davies signed up with the French Football Club Sochaux-Montbéliard in French Ligue 1, which is the top division in French football. Sochaux is a strong team and recently won the French Cup in 2007.

Chelsea Striker Didier Drogba Let Off with Police Caution

Didier DrogbaImage via Wikipedia
Didier Drogba, the Chelsea striker, got cautioned for common assault over the incident in November when he threw a coin at Burnley fans who had thrown missiles at the Chelsea players.

Drogba immediately apologised after the match but was banned for three matches by the Football Association.

The caution was given after police obtained legal advice from the Crown Prosecution Service.

This seems punishment enough for a relatively minor infraction, for which he has already received the wrath of the Football Association.

U.S. Olympic Women's Soccer Suffers Blow From Abby Wambach's Broken Leg

The U.S. Women's Soccer team have had hopes of going for gold, with their star player and top scorer Abby Wambach. But in an exhibition match against Brazil on Wednesday, she violently collided with a Brazilian player. She suffered fractures to the tibia and fibula in her left leg.

She had been doing brilliantly until then. She had scored 99 goals in 127 appearnces.

She underwent surgery successfully the next morning. It involved a "nail placement". The surgeon said it was a significant injury to her bone.

She will need two months or so to recuperate, and the Olympic team will have to go ahead without her.

Will Cristiano Ronaldo Transfer to Real Madrid?

The soccer world is waiting with bated breath for an indication from Cristiano Ronaldo whether he will make a move to Real Madrid. And so are Real Madrid.

So far Ronaldo has only said that he will not decide until Euro 2008 is finished. But Real is anxiously looking for a signal from him.

Miguel Angel Arroyo, general director of the Spanish club, says as soon as he gives the nod, they will begin negotiations with Manchester United.

Christiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo is regarded by many as today's best soccer player, and Manchester United wants to keep him till the end of his contract at the end of the 2011-2012 season, and has complained about Real Madrid's attempts to entice Ronaldo away.

It is rumoured that Real Madrid would consider paying Ronaldo $30 million a season. Can an offer like that be refused? That would make him the world's highest paid soccer player.

Ronaldo Is da Man - of Manchester Utd | Soccer

Manchester United won the Premier League title, the tenth win in the League's 16 year history. Only goes to show that Man Utd are a great team.

But Man Utd had uneasy moments in the early stages, when Ronaldo was suspended from play.

Much of the credit for Manchester Utd's win must go to Ronaldo. He was their top scorer, achieving 31 league goals, and 41 goals in all the club's competitions.

Ronaldo is da man, a great player, and some think he will be considered the world's best.

Egypt Wins Africa Cup of Nations 1-0

The Eqyptian side, who were the defending champion, were always the better skilled, but the Cameroon team put on a spirited display. It was no walk-through by Egypt, and there were a few times when Cameroon might just have scored.

It looked as though the final would have to end with penalty shoot-outs. But at the eleventh hour Zidan of Egypt managed a pass to Abou Trika who shot to win the only goal in the match.

It wasn't the most memorable game. Perhaps too much nerves on both sides.

The celebrations and ceremony afterwards were very colourful and entertaining.

With this victory, Egypt has set a record to have won the trophy for the sixth time.

Arsenal Outguns Manchester United After Win Over Everton

Bad news for Manchester United. The win by Arsenal against Everton (4-1) means that Arsenal is ahead of Man Utd in the league table.

It was by no means an easy win for Arsenal. The match was dominated by Everton's more skilful play but luck was not on their side despite an early lead with a goal after 19 minutes. Soon after the break Eduardo equalised and scored yet another goal at 58 minutes.

Everton had a chance to make good after Bendtner was sent off. But a mix-up between Yobo and the goalie let Adebyor to kick into an empty Everton net. Ugly scenes led to a facing off between the teams' players after Arteta seemed to have hit Fabregas in the face. Arteta being sent off the field lost Everton's numerical advantage. Quickly Arsenal solidified their win with a final goal by Rosicky.

Despite the loss the Everton team thought they played the better game, and were stunned to have lost 4-1.

Meanwhile, Manchester Utd lost to West Ham 1-2. Much blame was placed on Cristiano Ronaldo for missing a penalty kick. Still he was the player who scored the only goal for Man Utd with a header within 15 minutes of the game. Man Utd's boss said of his team,”You can't expect them to be perfect all the time.” I guess not, after what's happened elsewhere recently.

The Manchester United Party Scandal

I think it is only fair that the other side of the story should be told.

Jonny Evans has claimed that the allegation of rape is totally untrue. He had only danced with the woman, and that her boyfriend attacked him on the dance-floor out of jealousy. It was only after this that the boyfriend called the police with the rape complaint.

Evans is well-liked and is described as shy and well-behaved, and his family and friends just cannot believe the complaint against him could be true.

However, there seems little doubt that what was happening at the hotel, even minus the rape complaint, was a total scandal. Booze was flowing wildly. The men were acting with such abandon that some of the female guests were said to be reduced to tears, and described their behaviour as like “cattle-market groping”. Wives were not on the guest-list.

All in all, it was was not a night to remember for Manchester United.
